Preview

The Atlanta Braves travel to UNIQLO Field at Dodger Stadium on Sunday, October 4, for a Division Series showdown against the Los Angeles Dodgers, with first pitch set for 8:00 PM ET on FS1/FOX ONE. The Dodgers will send Blake Snell to the hill in what figures to be one of the toughest individual pitching assignments Atlanta will face this postseason. Atlanta's starter has not been confirmed heading into this one, adding an extra layer of intrigue to an already high-stakes October matchup between two of baseball's marquee franchises.

Braves vs. Dodgers NLDS: What Atlanta Is Walking Into

Make no mistake — this is a road assignment against one of the most dangerous lineups in baseball. The Dodgers are rolling out a batting order that reads like an All-Star ballot. Mookie Betts leads things off from shortstop, followed immediately by Shohei Ohtani hitting in the two-hole as the designated hitter. That's not a lineup. That's a gauntlet.

Then it gets harder. Will Smith bats third, Freddie Freeman — yes, that Freddie Freeman — hits cleanup in his familiar spot at first base. Teoscar Hernández and Kyle Tucker follow at five and six, giving Los Angeles run-producing threats scattered throughout every segment of the order. Andy Pages, Miguel Rojas, and Tommy Edman round things out, but there's no soft landing anywhere in this lineup for Braves pitching.

Blake Snell Starts for Los Angeles

Snell on the mound in a postseason game is a problem. The left-hander is a two-time Cy Young Award winner with the kind of swing-and-miss arsenal that can make any lineup look overmatched on a given night. Atlanta's hitters will need a disciplined approach — work counts, don't chase the breaking ball, and make him throw strikes early. That's easier said than done against Snell in October at his home ballpark.

Atlanta's starter remains unannounced, which means Brian Snitker and the Braves' front office are either holding their cards close or navigating some uncertainty. Either way, whoever toes the rubber for Atlanta has a massive task ahead facing this Dodgers lineup.

Keys to the Game for Atlanta

  • Survive Snell early: If Atlanta can grind through five or six innings without getting blown out, the Dodgers' bullpen becomes the equalizer. Don't let him put the game away in the first three frames.
  • Neutralize the top of the order: Betts and Ohtani back-to-back is a nightmare scenario for any pitcher. Getting through those two at-bats with minimal damage is essential every single inning.
  • Handle Freeman: There will be emotion when Freddie digs in at the plate. Atlanta's pitcher has to treat him like any other hitter. Sentiment doesn't get you outs in October.
  • Make something happen on the bases: Against elite pitching, manufactured runs matter. Atlanta can't afford to sit back and wait for a big inning that may never come against Snell.
  • Keep Tucker and Hernández in the ballpark: Both are legitimate power threats who can change a game with one swing. Especially with men on base, these are the at-bats that decide series.

Prediction

This is a brutal draw for Atlanta — a road playoff game against a former Cy Young winner in front of a raucous Dodger Stadium crowd. The Dodgers' lineup is legitimately stacked from top to bottom, and Snell has the capability to be utterly dominant when he's locked in. Atlanta needs a clean, efficient outing from its starter, timely hits against one of the game's best pitchers, and a bullpen that can hold the lead if the offense delivers. That's a lot of things to go right simultaneously on the road.

The Dodgers are favored here, and reasonably so. But the Braves have been in big moments before. Expect a competitive game that stays within reach into the late innings — though Los Angeles's lineup depth ultimately proves the difference. Dodgers 5, Braves 3.
